Who I Am In Christ

Throughout the Apostolic letters — epistles — of the New Testament we find references to us being in Christ and what that means to who we are.

Here are a couple of examples:

Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: The old has gone, the new is here!  ~ 1 Corinthians 5:17

So in Christ Jesus you are all children of God through faith,  for all of you who were baptized into Christ have clothed yourselves with Christ. ~ Galatians 3:26-27

As long as we are IN CHRIST, we share in who Christ is. Christ becomes our new identity. We come to share in Christ’s attributes.

Some of the attributes we share with Christ are as follows:

Child of God

What scripture says about Christ Jesus

No one has ever seen God, but the one and only Son, who is himself God and is in closest relationship with the Father, has made him known. ~ John 1:18

What scripture says about those who are In Christ

For those God foreknew he also predestined to be conformed to the image of his Son, that he might be the firstborn among many brothers and sisters. ~ Romans 8:29

Yet to all who did receive him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God— children born not of natural descent, nor of human decision or a husband’s will, but born of God. ~ John 1:12-13

Righteous

What scripture says about Christ Jesus and those In Christ

God made him who had no sin to be sin for us, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God. ~ 2 Corinthians 5:21

Priest of God

What scripture says about Christ Jesus

Such a high priest truly meets our need—one who is holy, blameless, pure, set apart from sinners, exalted above the heavens. Unlike the other high priests, he does not need to offer sacrifices day after day, first for his own sins, and then for the sins of the people. He sacrificed for their sins once for all when he offered himself. For the law appoints as high priests men in all their weakness; but the oath, which came after the law, appointed the Son, who has been made perfect forever. ~ Hebrews 7:26-28

What scripture says about those who are In Christ

But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God’s special possession, that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light. ~ 1 Peter 2:9

Temple of God

What scripture says about Christ Jesus

Jesus answered them, “Destroy this temple, and I will raise it again in three days.”

They replied, “It has taken forty-six years to build this temple, and you are going to raise it in three days?” But the temple he had spoken of was his body. ~ John 2:19-21

What scripture says about those who are In Christ

Jesus replied, “Anyone who loves me will obey my teaching. My Father will love them, and we will come to them and make our home with them.” ~ John 14:23

Don’t you know that you yourselves are God’s temple and that God’s Spirit dwells in your midst? If anyone destroys God’s temple, God will destroy that person; for God’s temple is sacred, and you together are that temple. ~ 1 Corinthians 3:16-17

Healer

What scripture says about Christ Jesus

Jesus went through all the towns and villages, teaching in their synagogues, proclaiming the good news of the kingdom and healing every disease and sickness. ~ Matthew 9:35

What scripture says about those who are In Christ

“Very truly I tell you, whoever believes in me will do the works I have been doing, and they will do even greater things than these, because I am going to the Father.” ~  Christ Jesus in John 14:12

Therefore confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous man is powerful and effective. ~ James 5:16

Has Eternal Life

What scripture says about Christ Jesus and those In Christ

And this is the testimony: God has given us eternal life, and this life is in his Son. Whoever has the Son has life; whoever does not have the Son of God does not have life. ~ 1 John 5:11-12

Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life. The one who believes in me will live, even though they die.” ~ John 11:25

“Before long, the world will not see me anymore, but you will see me. Because I live, you also will live. ~ Christ Jesus in John 14:19

Heir of God

What scripture says about Christ Jesus

But in these last days he has spoken to us by his Son, whom he appointed heir of all things, and through whom also he made the universe. ~ Hebrews 1:2

What scripture says about those who are In Christ

Now if we are children, then we are heirs—heirs of God and co-heirs with Christ, if indeed we share in his sufferings in order that we may also share in his glory. ~ Romans 8:17

Enjoys Union with God

What scripture says about Christ Jesus

Jesus answered: “Don’t you know me, Philip, even after I have been among you such a long time? Anyone who has seen me has seen the Father. How can you say, ‘Show us the Father’? Don’t you believe that I am in the Father, and that the Father is in me? The words I say to you I do not speak on my own authority. Rather, it is the Father, living in me, who is doing his work.” ~ John 14:9-10

For in Christ all the fullness of the Deity lives in bodily form. ~ Colossians 2:9

The Son is the radiance of God’s glory and the exact representation of his being, sustaining all things by his powerful word. After he had provided purification for sins, he sat down at the right hand of the Majesty in heaven. ~ Hebrews 1:3

What scripture says about those who are In Christ

On that day you will realize that I am in my Father, and you are in me, and I am in you. ~ John 14:20

Lives in Heaven

What scripture says about Christ Jesus

That power is the same as the mighty strength he exerted when he raised Christ from the dead and seated him at his right hand in the heavenly realms, far above all rule and authority, power and dominion, and every name that is invoked, not only in the present age but also in the one to come. ~ Ephesians 1:19-21

What scripture says about those who are In Christ

And God raised us up with Christ and seated us with him in the heavenly realms in Christ Jesus. ~ Ephesians 2:6

Victor

What scripture says about Christ Jesus

Then the end will come, when he hands over the kingdom to God the Father after he has destroyed all dominion, authority and power. For he must reign until he has put all his enemies under his feet. The last enemy to be destroyed is death. For he “has put everything under his feet.” Now when it says that “everything” has been put under him, it is clear that this does not include God himself, who put everything under Christ. When he has done this, then the Son himself will be made subject to him who put everything under him, so that God may be all in all. ~ 1 Corinthians 15:24-28

What scripture says about those who are In Christ

Then I heard a loud voice in heaven say: “Now have come the salvation and the power and the kingdom of our God, and the authority of his Messiah. For the accuser of our brothers and sisters, who accuses them before our God day and night, has been hurled down. They triumphed over him by the blood of the Lamb and by the word of their testimony; they did not love their lives so much as to shrink from death. ~ Revelation 12:10-11

There are many more aspects of Christ that we share when we join ourselves with him. We bind ourselves with Christ through faith and by faith we participate in the life of Christ.

The sacrament of baptism is a dramatic illustration of the spiritual transaction taking place in our hearts: In Christ we die and are buried. We are dead and gone. In Christ we are raised up with New Life as New Beings. We are one with Christ and share in Christ’s life. Our previous life is dead and buried — it is done and away with. Because Christ lives, we live. We are completely new beings in Christ and take on the heart and mind and life of Christ.
